Johnny Beerling joined the BBC in 1957, and started producing BBC Radio 1 from the first show with Tony Blackburn.
During his time at Radio 1 Johnny transformed the station into the biggest national radio station in the UK. His Radio 1 book describes how radio history was made with the creation of the Radio 1 Roadshow, The Beatles Story, the move from medium wave to national 24-hour Radio 1 FM, coverage of Live Aid for the BBC and much much more.
Johnny's story, shows how he started as a radio technician in Aden and finally became BBC Radio 1 Controller - it’s all there in his Radio 1 book 'Radio 1 – The Inside Scene'. The book charts the complete history of Radio 1 over the years.
During his time at Radio 1, Johnny worked with many of the big stars of the period including some of the biggest stars such as Cliff Richard, Neil Diamond, The Bay City Rollers, Madonna, Jim Reeves and The Beatles.
Of course no Radio 1 book would be complete without stories about the Radio 1 DJs – many of whom are still household names. Remember Noel Edmonds, Dave Lee Travis, Emperor Rosko, David Hamilton, Johnnie Walker, Terry Wogan, Simon Mayo, Mark Goodier, Roger Scott, Nicky Campbell, Jimmy Savile, John Peel, Simon Mayo, Kenny Everett and Paul Burnett? Johnny worked with them all.
During his career at BBC Radio 1 Johnny was responsible for employing many of these personalities, and as the boss took responsibility for their shows.
Radio 1 was recognised as one of the leading music broadcasting stations in the world, with a weekly audience of over 21 million listeners and this semi-autobiographical Radio 1 book describes the 25 years that made Radio 1 into a household name.
Johnny's book, “Radio 1 – The Inside Scene” contains over 300 pages observed from the inside of Radio 1 when it was at its prime. Information and behind the scenes gossip which will be of interest all Radio 1 listeners past and present.
To many Johnny was and still is the heart and soul of Radio 1. His book 'Radio 1 – The Inside Scene' is the only Radio 1 book that will give you a full insight into the birth and growth of the biggest national radio station.
For the last 20 years Johnny has been Chairman of the Radio Data System (RDS) Forum, an international body which co-ordinates the interests of the world's broadcasters and radio manufacturers involved in data broadcasting. (Amongst other things RDS is responsible for the Road Traffic Reporting bulleting feature on your car radios.)
In May 1993 Johnny was presented with a SONY Award for Outstanding Services to the Radio Industry and in June 2005 he was made a Fellow of the Radio Academy - the highest award in the radio industry.
Johnny now lives in Yorkshire where he keeps busy enjoying his favourite pastimes - fishing, painting and Skiing. You may even run into Johnny on holiday as he now also does some cruise lecturing.
